She told me he attributed it to the day she started taking a colon cleanse to lose some quick weight. Her husband had used a cleanse for years and talked her into it. She suspected there’d be a little bit of weight loss initially, but was surprised to see how much she dropped and how easy it was to maintain the loss as well. In the turn of the last century, John Kellogg, M.D. used colon therapy on thousands of his patients. In 1917 he reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association that of his 40 thousand patients having gastrointestinal diseases, he needed to resort to surgery to treat only 20 cases. This started the trend of increased popularity of colon therapy from the 1920’s through the 1940’s evidenced by the presence of colon irrigation machines in virtually every doctor’s office. This past decade and in particular, the past year, has seen a huge resurgence of interest in colon cleanse with the advent of better home solutions – both less invasive and more private.

What are the risks?

Anything you put in your body carries a risk with it. Way back to the ol’ reed in the rectum in the river (a song?), I’m sure someone had a problem along the way. One of the biggest risks of a colon cleanse is that, if done too aggressively and for a long period of time, you lose valuable minerals and “probiotics” (good bacteria) that are necessary for good health. Some of the better cleanses make up for this by supplying them to replenish your system. Another risk is that some cleanses are basically just cheap, strong laxatives that react severely with your system. Many times these are products that were designed for use in livestock or other animals. They can cause severe pain and cramping from gas build up and muscle spasm.

The other side of the coin is the risk that comes up from NOT cleansing the colon. Even though colon cleansing has been around for so long, it’s today’s lifestyles that make it more of a necessity than ever. Before 1950, the phrase “fast food” meant a 12-point deer running through the woods. That year, Hostess put in some cream filling and added some squiggles to a cupcake and launched an explosion of fat-laden baked snacks. In 1955, McDonald’s started the nationwide growth of the fast food giants. It goes without saying that the American way of eating has filled our bodies with fats, chemicals, and toxins on a scale that the body has never seen before.

The Colon and intestines have a huge job sorting out the good from the bad in your body. As that cheeseburger passes through (taking days) not only the nutrients are extracted – all the fat, cholesterol, and toxic additives are pulled into your bloodstream too. And they’re stored in your body – in the fat cells! As the remainder mass of sludge moves through your system, much remains behind for a long time and can build up a substance called “mucoid plaque” which adheres to the colon walls. This is a thick, slimy mass that can remain in you for years and adds pounds of dead weight to your body.

And then there’s no need to even remind you of the huge increase in number of cases of Cancer of the Colon lately. It has been standard procedure that all persons of age 50 and over should get regular colonoscopy exams. But lately physicians are re-thinking that maybe a younger age would be more prudent, given the rapid development of Colon Cancer seen lately. Colon health equates to body health more than we realized.

How Do I Do a Cleanse:

There are basically three ways to cleanse the colon:

1. Enemas -Hydrotherapy is a bit on the physical side and messy to do yourself. Can be even dangerous if you don’t know what you’re doing, but it could also be expensive if done by a professional. 3. Buy a Colon Cleanse product - They’re made to do this quickly, easily, and do it well. A good cleanse is gentle while being thorough. My Experience with Cleanses:
